Blog Post #14

For elementary education majors
While teaching, you will come across holidays. Teaching children, most likely your students will contain a focus other than learning while at school before breaking for a holiday. Lesson plans during the week of holidays will be different than your usual lesson plans. Create a lesson plan for your choice of holiday and grade as a presentation. The plans must be focused on a holiday your school will take a break for. Include at least one fun activity your students can do that accommodates the holiday that is about to be celebrated. Make it a fun and exciting week of learning for the students!

  1. This looks interesting. How would Dr. Strange go about incorporating this into assignments for EDM 310?

    1. I think it could be assigned close to a holiday. Over the summer we have celebrated the 4th of July. During the school year, there are multiple holidays so I think it could be assigned near these. It could either be on the holiday South Alabama is about to let out for, or any holiday during the school year.

  2. "Teaching children, most likely your students will contain a focus other than learning while at school before breaking for a holiday." What does this mean?

You want the holiday to be the focus of a project in the week before the holiday? Is that what you are trying to say?

What holidays does USA recognize (during terms):
    Labor Day
    Thanksgiving
    Martin Luther King Day
    Mardi Gras
    July 4 (Easter)

All the rest occur during breaks. I doubt that you intended the suggestion for me to implement.

    1. I know in school the week before a holiday, that holiday was all I thought about. Having holiday lesson plans can help the student still be learning but focuses on the holiday about to be celebrated. So yes, I would want the holiday to be the focus of a project.
The list of holidays you included are the ones USA recognizes. These could be opportunities to assign the blog post. Besides the ones listed, elementary school are also closed for Memorial day (depending on school location), Veterans Day, and Presidents Day that could be created into lesson plans.

  3. Hi Grace,

I like the idea of your lesson plan, but I'm not sure how useful this would be for Dr. Strange to assign this to elementary ed students who take edm 310. It is great that you are getting more practice making lesson plans though.
